THE traditional hoisting of the giant national flag to commemorate Brunei 26th National Day was held at the open space of Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Shopping Complex in the capital yesterday marking the start of the hoisting of the national flags in homes, offices and private buildings nationwide.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Ahmad Hj Jumat said that the hoisting of the national flag has become a symbolic act of love for one's country as the flag represents a nation's sovereignty.

"With a flag being a symbol of a country, it is our responsibility as citizens to fly the flags during important patriotic occasions such as the upcoming national day celebration as fulfilling deeds for the country," he said.

He added the theme for this year's national day is "Negaraku Brunei Darussalam" (My country, Brunei Darussalam), was an expressional confession that states that Brunei Darussalam is not any other country, but it is our country.

The giant flag, 12-foot wide and 24-foot long, and the 110-foot high pole, that sits in the centre of the capital, in front of the Yayasan complex has been used for the occasion since 2001.

Around 300 government officials attended the event and was also witnessed by the public.

The ceremony began with the Royal Brunei Navy marching its way to the pole and the flag being handed over to them by the minister.

The flag was then slowly raised accompanied by the national anthem, "Allah Peliharakan Sultan" by the choir group consisting of students from Sekolah Tinggi Perempuan Raja Isteri (STPRI), Maktab Sultan Omar 'Ali Saifuddien led by the Royal Brunei Police Force band.

The ceremony concluded with the handing over of flags and National Day posters by the minister to all district officers, namely Dato Paduka Hj Yussof Bakar of Brunei-Muara, Hj Jamain Hj Momin of Belait , Hj Metussin Orang Kaya Sura Hj Tuba of Temburong , and Hj Suffian Hj Bungsu, acting District Officer of Tutong. The flags and the national day posters will be distributed for free to the residents of their districts.

The hoisting of the national flags was also held in all the nation's four districts.

In Brunei-Muara , the ceremony was held at the District Office which was started off with a procession by the Secondary School Cadet Police band, the Army Cadets and 26 flag bearers, according to report by Radio Television Brunei (RTB), last night.

At the ceremony, the Brunei-Muara Assistant District Officer Hj Haris Osman handed over the national flag to the District Officer Dato Paduka Hj Md Yussof Bakar to be raised.

Personnel from the Royal Brunei Police Forces raised the flag while the Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College choir was singing the National Anthem.

This was then followed by presentation of the national flags to mukim leaders in the district by the district officer. In Tutong District, the flag hoisting ceremony was held at the Pasarneka and the Tutong Open Market Complex.

The Assistant Tutong District Officer Hj Abd Ghani Hj Othman headed a convoy of flag bearers accompanied by the Prison's Department band, the Four-wheel Drive Vehicles Association, Kekal Motorcycle Association, the Scouts Association and the Tutong District Youth Association to present the national flag to Acting Tutong District Officer Hj Muhammad Suffian Hj Bungsu.

He then handed over the flag to Detective Supervisor Officer of the Tutong District Police Insp Abdul Hafizazuddin Hj Abdul Wahab to be raised.

Hj Muhammad Suffian then distributed the national flags to all penghulu mukim and representatives of the "Youth Love The Country" programme.

Meanwhile,the raising of the national flag to mark Brunei 26th National Day in Belait District was conducted at the Cendera Kenangan Monument situated in Jalan Sungai Kuala Belait, RTB reported.

The flag was presented to members of the Royal Brunei Police Force by Belait District Officer Hj Jamain Momin to be raised.

The district officer also presented the national flags to penghulu mukim and village leaders in the district, while Assistant Belait District Officer Hj Abdul Hamid Dato Paduka Hj Abdullah handed over the flag to the head of the "Youth Love The Country" programme.

According to the report, the flag-hoisting ceremony was also held at Dewan Belalong in Bangar Town, Temburong.

Present at the event was Temburong District Officer Matusin Orang Kaya Sura Hj Tuba, who presented the flag to the Royal Brunei Police Forces personnel to be hoisted.

As in other districts, the national flags were also presented to leaders of mukim and village in Belait District.
