HM addresses democracy forum

HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, yesterday lauded the Bali Democracy Forum for provides an opportunity to exchange views and experiences on regional and international affairs.

In his titah at the Opening Session of the Second Bali Democracy Forum, His Majesty highlighted challenges that threaten Brunei's traditional way of life, which may lead to insecurities on its economy, finance and environment.

His Majesty further stated that it is important for leaders to have the trust and confidence of the people that these challenges will be met.

In this regard, His Majesty said that the Brunei government continues to give priority to important matters such as education, health care, food security and economic diversification.

His Majesty also stressed the importance of Asean and acknowledged the efforts by the regional association in adapting to the 21st century, of which he highlighted the target for regional integration of an Asean Community 2015 and encouraged member states to work together to achieve this.

The two-day session this year is themed "Promoting Synergy between Democracy and Development in Asia: Prospects for Regional Cooperation".

In the morning, His Majesty met with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. During the meeting, the monarch expressed appreciation for the invitation to the forum and congratulated President Yudhoyono in hosting the forum.

His Majesty and President Yudhoyono also exchanged views on bilateral matters.

His Majesty was one of three heads of government to attend the inaugural Bali Democracy Forum last year.

Following the General Debate, His Majesty attended a luncheon hosted by the Indonesian president.
