HM pays last respects to late Cheteria

HIS Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday offered his last respects to Yang Amat Mulia Pg Setia Raja Pg Hj Jaya Pg Hj Rajid, who passed away early yesterday morning.

Present to accompany the monarch at Kg Sg Tilong in Jalan Muara was His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office.

His Majesty and His Royal Highness also participated in mass prayers for the deceased, which was led by State Mufti Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia (Dr) Ustaz Hj Abdul Aziz Juned.

Allahyarham YAM passed away at approximately 5.45am at the RIPAS Hospital. He was 83 years old.

YAM was bestowed the Cheteria title, "YAM Pengiran Setia Raja" on March 18, 1969, according to Radio Televisyen Brunei. YAM also received other titles such as "Dato Laila Utama", DK and "Dato Seri Utama" and other awards of recognition during his lifetime. He was the first bumiputera (local) officer appointed as Commissioner of Police for the Royal Brunei Force in 1975. He held the post until 1983, before being appointed as an ambassador to several countries including France in 1985 and Thailand in October 1990.

YAM was also appointed as a member of the Majlis Mesyuarat Di-Raja (Privy Council) as well as a member of the Majlis Mesyuarat Mengangkat Raja (Royal Succession Council).

YAM is survived by his wife, eight children, more than 30 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

He was laid to rest at the Kubah Makam Di-Raja, or Royal Mausoleum..

About a month ago, His Majesty also attended the funeral of another Cheteria, YAM Pg Lela Negara Pg Hj Mohammad ibni Al-Marhum Pg Bendahara Pg Anak Abdul Rahman, who passed away on September 1 at the age of 81.
