44 officer cadets enrol at training school

THE Officer Cadet School (OCS) of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) yesterday welcomed its third intake, consisting of 44 new officer cadets who are to undergo training at the OCS from September 25 to July 2010.

Held at the Berakas Garrison Officers' Mess, the new ranks were presented by RBAF Commander Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General Dato Paduka Seri Hj Halbi Hj Md Yussof. Also presentwere senior officers and parents of the officer cadets.

Out of the 44 cadets, 21 are from the Royal Brunei Land Force, (16 males and five females), nine males and three female from the Royal Brunei Navy and 11 from the Royal Brunei Air Force, consisting of nine males and two females Prior to embarking their training at OCS, all the cadets underwent a rigorous selection process where their physical and mental capabilities were assessed by the Armed Forces Commission Board.

The officer cadet course is spread over a period of 43 weeks where they will be spending 17 weeks on generic and basic military training and another 19 weeks which will be focused on specialist training aligned to their respective units. The remaining six weeks will be spent on tri-service training.

After undergoing the tri-service generic training term the army, midshipmen and air force officer cadets will then go to their respective units from which they will continue training to be army, naval and air force officers.

For the final semester, the cadets will undergo further professional development evaluations including military exercises, final assessments and passing out parade in which all cadets achieving the required standard will finally be commissioned into the RBAF before returning to their respective service units.

One of the aims of the OCS is to train officer cadets to become future officers of the armed forces, catering to the needs and requirements of the tri-service, and is the first phase in the development of a Defence Academy in line with the aspirations of the Defence White Paper Update of 2007.

Established in 2007, the OCS comprises a school headquarters and army, midshipman and air force wings. Collectively, the school strives to inculcate leadership values and forge common bonds among the officer cadets.

To date, 32 officer cadets from the first intake have been commissioned from the OCS.

On July 23, the Sovereign's Parade ceremony for the first intake was officiated by His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam, Minister of Defence and Supreme Commander of RBAF at the Parade Square of the RBAF OCS in Sg Akar Camp.

A warm and jubilant atmosphere filled the hall of the Officer's Mess yesterday as parents and relatives of the newly enrolled officer cadets wish them well before they go off for training at the camp amidst of Hari Raya festivities. (AFH1)
