$115k donated to orphans

A TOTAL of 772 orphans from the Belait and Tutong districts will receive $115,800 through donations before the Hari Raya season.

The national orphans' fund contributed $77,200, while Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) provided $38,600 to the 300 and 472 orphans of Belait and Tutong districts respectively. The handing over ceremony was held at the Dewan Santap in Belait town.

Deputy Director of the Community Development Department (JAPEM) Hjh Misnah Hj Bolhassan highlighted the significance of the public's sympathy and responsibility.

"Donations for orphans started more than three decades ago and I am thankful that the tradition is still being carried out until today," she said.

Support from the public can always be seen and is especially strong during the fasting months, said Hjh Misnah. "The Short Messaging Service (SMS) Brunei Prihatin has made a huge difference in terms of convenience to donate. It gives everyone, young or old, a chance to donate and help orphans in the country," the deputy director said.

This year, donations are given through village chiefs. She said that representatives from each area will distribute the donations accordingly before the Hari Raya season begins.

Donations were distributed by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Ahmad Hj Jumat and Minister of Development cum Chairman of BIBD Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Abdullah Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar.

This year, JAPEM records donations amounting to $333,150; $222,100 is from the national orphans' fund and $111,050 is contributed by BIBD. A total of 2,221 orphans in the country under the age of 18 received donations this year. (GDN1)
