LegCo members praise His Majesty’s leadership
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
STATE Legislative Council members yesterday praised His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam's leadership in averting the global economic crisis and recent natural disasters, as well as the formation of the Sustainability Fund Order.
"The success of handling this global economic crisis is due to the wisdom and leadership of His Majesty, directly stabilising and strengthening the country's socio-economy," said Orang Kaya Maha Bijaya Hj Othman Uking during a vote of thanks session for His Majesty's attendance and titah at the opening of the council's first meeting of the fifth session.
"In foreign countries, many workers have lost their jobs, which might result in a number of problems including social complications," he said, before elaborating how Brunei had been able to avoid the crisis due to the Sultanate's establishment and maturity in handling the problem.
"During this time of the global economic crisis, which has affected the whole world, our country is still holding on in a stable and strong condition," said Dato Paduka Hj Puasa Orang Kaya Seri Pahlawan Tudin, who attributed this to the wise leadership of His Majesty.
Echoing his views during yesterday's morning session was Pehin Kapitan Lela Diraja Dato Paduka Goh King Chin.
"Millions of workers have been forced to stop working, factories have been closed and this looks to be the worst global crisis that has happened in the past 80 years," said Pehin Dato Goh.
"Thankfully, because of His Majesty's wisdom and sovereignty, we in Brunei have not felt the impact (of the global economic crisis)," he said, adding that the population should however prepare themselves to confront the global crisis.
"We also have to be prudent with our money and avoid wastage, spend by your means."
Pehin Dato Goh also spoke of His Majesty's formation of the Sustainability Fund Order, adding that this is a good strategy for the long run and should be appreciated by all citizens.
"His Majesty has also prepared a special allocation of $30 million to repair the affected areas caused by the floods and landslides, to prevent the same thing from happening again in the future," he said.
"All of this is because of His Majesty's concern towards the welfare and peace of the people."
Orang Kaya Jaya Putera Dato Paduka Hj Muhammad Taha Abd Rauf, representative of Tutong District mentioned His Majesty personally visiting Mukim Tanjong Maya on February 10 to get a first hand look and experience of flood-hit victims.
"This means that His Majesty pays deep attention on the matter," he said.
