Aid to Myanmar, China disaster victims hits $71,000

DONATIONS for victims of the deadly cyclone in Myanmar and the Sichuan earthquake in China have reached $71,179, with more than half raised through contributions sent via text messages.

The humanitarian fund for the Myanmar and China disaster victims was set up on May 17.

Contributions through short message service or text messages amounted to $48,354.

The latest contribution to the fund, worth $2,176, was received yesterday by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Hj Mohammad Hj Daud, who is also the fund co-advisor.

A contribution of $1,000 came from the Women's Council of Brunei Darussalam and $1,176 was received from the Peer Guidance Group from the Sixth Form College Berakas.

Presenting the money on behalf of the Women's Council of Brunei Darussalam was its President, Datin Hjh Fatimah DSS Abang Hj Razali, while the Peer Guidance Group was represented by its President, Mohd Khairul Hazwan Hj Maidin.

A total of $600 was also donated to the China and Myanmar disaster relief funds in the name of the Art to Heart exhibition. The event, which was organised by the Brunei Art Forum, came to an end last Sunday.

Some of the art pieces displayed during the exhibition were put up for sale through an open auction system.

The amount which will be donated to charity makes up 20 per cent of the total proceeds.

The Community Development Department under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports hopes to receive more donations from the public as well as various other institutions

Organisers said donations can still be made through text messages as well as collection boxes located in shops, banks and mosques nationwide. (AAB1 and YZH1)
