GOVERNMENT and private agencies should work together to divert the mindset of the youth from strongly favouring positions in the public sector to one that is entrepreneurial and business-savvy.

The call was made by the Minister of Industry and Primary Resources (MIPR), Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Ahmad Hj Jumat, during the State Legislative Council meeting yesterday.

The minister noted that out of a population of 391,000, an overwhelming amount of 71,000 individuals in Brunei are employed by the government, including those that are daily-rated.

"This is a huge number of people to administer our small population of only 391,000," he said, adding that this figure posed a problem when discussing the state budget.

He urged a change in the preference of the country's present and future workforce for administrative positions. "Why shouldn't they not be self-employed, and start their own businesses?"

Pehin Dato Dr Hj Ahmad also thought that various government agencies and even some private firms should play a part in fostering entrepreneurship among locals.

"MIPR has its entrepreneurship development centre in Sinaut (in Tutong), while the Education Ministry has the Young Entrepreneurs' Scheme," he said. There are a number of support programme for local small-and-medium businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs. The Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources's entrepreneurial development centres holds workshops and incubator programmes, while BEDB's iCentre offers incubation programmes to expedite ICT startups.
